The MLB Sorting Hat | OPENING WEEK TAKEOVER

12:49 PM

If someone told me that they have never imagined what Hogwarts house random people would be in, I would say they were lying. If I told you that I have never imagined what Hogwarts house random baseball players would be in, I would be lying. Under the cut, I do just that for 8 of MLB's big names.

Víctor Martínez
I was sold on this house choice for VMart after thinking about only one of its defining qualities; patience. Tigers fans are well aware of VMart's ability to stretch out a plate appearance, and there is nothing like a satisfying base hit (or home run, if we're lucky) after a lengthy string of foul balls. With that being said, Víctor also displays hard work and dedication; even though he has been the victim of numerous injuries within the last few years, he always works his hardest to get back in the game. Remember when VMart was going into his free agent season and, instead of testing the market, signed with the Tigers once again? Loyalty. He's a keeper and, without a doubt, he's a Hufflepuff!

Alex Rodriguez
I struggled with this choice a lot, if only because I thought it was so obvious to put ARod into the so-called "evil" house. After a lot of careful consideration and discussion, though, it became clear: Alex Rodriguez belongs to Slytherin! You want to know why? He is essentially Draco Malfoy. Draco acted all big and bad but, really, wasn't he nothing but a softy when it came down to it? ARod did PEDs, yes, but he is afraid of needles. Draco walked away from Voldemort; he presumably didn't go full-evil. ARod came back to the game and did so in a way that actually made me like him. Total Draco move.

Chris Archer
For some reason, last season, I really disliked Chris Archer. I don't know why and it probably wasn't fair. Now, though? I love him. I think it's because we are in the same Hogwarts house because, I mean, that makes sense, right?! In interviews, Archer is incredibly eloquent and always seems like he is open to a really great conversation. He seems exceptionally smart but, also has a sense of humor and wit about him that is refreshing. Ravenclaw!

Bryce Harper
I'm not putting Harper in this house because I don't like him. I'm not even putting him in this house because I think he is a bad guy. I think Harper belongs in this house because he likes to stir stuff up. As of late, he has been passionate about the thrill of the game. Heck, he even wore a "Make Baseball Fun Again" hat after the first game of the season. I think that Bryce, while dedicated to the sport that he loves and its value and growth, likes to be a little bit of an antagonist. Slytherin!

Mike Trout
I'll admit, this pick doesn't have as much to do with the actual qualities of the house as it does the stigma that comes along with the house. Mike Trout is the best, supposedly, at everything. He's good at running, he's good at hitting, and he's good at fielding. You know that if he was at Hogwarts, he would be the student that got his house extra points that put them just over the edge to win the House Cup. Yup, Gryffindor!

Corey Kluber
For the most part, it seems that Corey likes to go about his business, pitch well, and stay mostly under the radar. He appears to be the type of guy that values knowledge and wisdom. I really don't have a lot to say about this pick, but I think that Corey just completely embodies Ravenclaw! Hardworking, intelligent, but still able to have a sense of humor.

Sean Doolittle
Sean is a really cool person. He supports queer rights, he helps out refugees, and he probably does a whole lot more that we don't even get to hear about. This acceptance is something that is key in housing him. He is dedicated to his sport, while also being a bit (more than a bit, let's be honest) of a goofball. Doolittle has worked really hard to get himself healthy again, which has, I'm sure, required extreme patience and diligence throughout the entire process. For all of these reasons, I have no qualms in placing Sean in Hufflepuff!

Josh Donaldson
This is kind of an oddball pick, I admit. I could definitely see young, teen-aged Josh among the Fred and George Weasleys that Gryffindor has to offer. Josh seems to have a goofy personality, but he also appears to be thoughtful and knowledgeable. The oddball part of this pick comes into play when I say that I am mainly basing it off of the fact that he has an upcoming guest spot on Vikings. Vikings are brave, courageous, and daring. And a Viking!Josh Donaldson is something that I want to be a part of.
