Top Ten Tuesday | Auto-Buy Authors
4:10 PM
Like a lot of fellow book bloggers/readers/lovers, I take a lot of pride in growing my book collection. While I can't always afford to buy every book that catches my eye, however, I still have those authors who I will metaphorically chain myself to, never to miss a new book release. I have taken a little liberty in this list, so let's just call it the Top Ten Auto-Read Authors list (be it via purchasing the book, checking it out from the library, borrowing from a friend, etc.). Note: these authors are in no particular order - I just kind of wrote the blurbs as they came to mind.
- Marissa Meyer - Oh, Marissa Meyer, author after my own heart. As this blog is just starting up, there is no real evidence on here as to my feelings about the Lunar Chronicles but, trust me, I'm obsessed. Waiting for Winter is like waiting for a train that is never going to arrive at the station. In addition to the Lunar Chronicles finale (out in November) and a bind up of short stories, Stars Above, due in February of next year, Meyer has Heartless and another untitled project to look forward to in 2016 (unless dates change). Excited is an understatement.
- Morgan Matson - Not sure why I decided to start my list with all of this name alliteration. I only discovered Matson at the very beginning of this year and have since devoured all 3 of her books (I haven't yet delved into the world of Katie Finn, Matson's alter ego, yet). There is just something about her writing that is so comforting and fun. The characters that she creates are ones that I could read about forever. Her next book, The Unexpected Everything, comes out next year. Stoked.
- Samantha Shannon - Again with the alliteration, Allison? Come on. Shannon is the author of The Bone Season and its subsequent installments. Only the first two books are out at the moment but I love them so much. The world is so easy to sink myself into and I cannot get enough of learning about the different clairvoyants and their skills. I'm not sure if Shannon will be publishing anything else while this series is still going on but, if she does, I'll be first in line (but, probably not).
- Leigh Bardugo - I'm noticing that a lot of these authors are ones who have only published within the same series, aside from some short stories or contributions to collections, so it might very well turn out that I don't enjoy what else they have to put out but, whatever, I'm sticking with it. Bardugo is the author of the Grisha trilogy and the upcoming (as in, next month!!!) Six of Crows, set in the same world. Her books were some of my first forays into fantasy and, while I have heard some people refer to them as fantasy-lite, I truly enjoyed the series. While I may not always agree with Bardugo's romantic endgames (Mal sucks, Nikolai forever), I'll certainly keep reading her books.
- Laini Taylor - I read the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy in January of this year on a whim. I was quickly obsessed. I've also read her contribution the My True Love Gave to Me and enjoyed it, as well. She just writes worlds and characters and stories that I am drawn to. Her prose is beautiful and I will never get enough of it. I am certainly interested in going back and reading more of her work. Taylor's next project is The Muse of Nightmares, due out next year.
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - No matter when or where Adichie's books are set, they always have elements of truth in them that can be applied to something happening in the world today. I have not yet read Half of a Yellow Sun (nor her short story collection), but Americanah and Purple Hibiscus were both phenomenal, the latter quickly becoming one of my favorite books. Adichie speaks on matters that are important to me as a woman, as well, which is always a plus. I will buy anything she publishes.
- Benjamin Alire Sáenz - It is no secret (except maybe on this blog because, again, it's brand new) that my favorite young adult book is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Besides that masterpiece, I have read two other books by Sáenz, both of which I loved. I am a long way off from reading every book he has ever published but, if and when he finally does announce the release of a new book, you can bet your bottom dollar I will be reading it almost immediately after it comes out. That's the least I can do for an author who brought my favorite book into my life, right? Right.
- Jenny Han - I think Han is great at creating realistic family portrayals and even greater at bringing diverse characters into young adult literature. I applaud her for that. Like with most other authors on this list, I haven't read everything that she has published, but what I have read, I adore. I also love Han's tweets and social media presence. Keep bringing me characters like Kitty Song Covey and I will keep reading your books, Jenny.
- Elizabeth Wein - I love Wein's take on historical fiction. She combines elements such as aviation, war, diversity, and way more into books that are completely digestible and important for teen readers (or adult readers, in my case). She is an expert at crafting relationship dynamics that are real - not always perfect, not always pretty, but always real. I also appreciate Wein's books because they take world events that have been written about so many times (World War II, for example) and focus on parts of them that are not as familiar. Also, this is completely beside the point, but I'm still convinced that Verity and Maddie (Code Name Verity) were in love. Don't tell me otherwise.
- Diverse Authors - I know this is kind of cheating. I couldn't think of a specific tenth author to put on this list. I know a lot of these authors already deal with diversity. If I see a book that deals with sexuality, race, mental illness, body type, whatever, I will almost always put it on my TBR and give it a chance. If I haven't read the author yet, I'll give it a shot. If I have previously hated something by the author, I still might give it a shot. Basically, the moral here is: write diverse books. I will read them.
Who are some of your auto-buy authors? Do we have any in common? Let me know!
